Only administrators can manage categories.

A **category** groups related tags (previously called types). Reporters see the category name above its tags in the Venzeo™ mobile app, so keep it short and easy to scan. Every tag belongs to exactly one category.

_Example: a skip-hire company groups its tags into the categories Container activity, Skip type, Waste type and Billing data._

## Add a category

1. Open the main menu, expand **Tags & Categories** and choose **Manage Tags & Categories**.
2. Click **Add new Category**.
3. Enter the **Category name**.
4. Click **Save**. **Successfully added** appears and the category is listed with **No limit restrictions set for this category**.

> **Note:** A new category has no tags yet, so you cannot set limits while adding it. Add tags first, then set the limits.

To add tags to the category, see [Adding and editing tags (types) for reports](https://help.venzeo.com/en/article/managing-types).

## Set how many tags reporters must pick

Limits need at least one active tag in the category. You can set a minimum and a maximum of up to the number of active tags in the category.

1. Open the main menu, expand **Tags & Categories** and choose **Manage Tags & Categories**.
2. Click **Edit** next to the category.
3. Turn on **Limit this category**.
4. Enter **Minimum tags**, **Maximum tags**, or both.
5. Click **Save**. **Successfully saved** appears and the categories table shows the new limits.

In the Venzeo™ mobile app, reporters see the limits above the category. The app does not accept a report until the number of tags picked from the category is within them.

> **Tip:** Set **Minimum tags** to 1 to make sure every report has a tag from this category.

## Rename a category

1. Open the main menu, expand **Tags & Categories** and choose **Manage Tags & Categories**.
2. Click **Edit** next to the category.
3. Change the **Category name**.
4. Click **Save**. **Successfully saved** appears.

## Deactivate a category

You can deactivate only a category with no active tags. Deactivate its tags or move them to another category first.

1. Open the main menu, expand **Tags & Categories** and choose **Manage Tags & Categories**.
2. Click **Edit** next to the category.
3. Click **Deactivate**, then confirm with **Deactivate**. **Successfully deactivated** appears and the category disappears from the list.

To use the category again, turn on **Show inactive categories**, click **Reactivate** next to the category and confirm.

To decide which categories to create, see [Setting up tags so reports reach the right team](https://help.venzeo.com/en/article/setting-up-tags-for-the-right-team).
